Exercise
Exercise is an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. No matter what your age and physical well-being, most people can exercise and it will aid in keeping your heart as healthy as possible. Many people think that exercise means a trip to a gym or a vigorous outdoor activity. While these types of exercises are good, they may be too strenuous for some individuals or for others they may be too inconvenient.
Even minimal activity can be helpful exercise. Short walks in the neighborhood are excellent exercise and hopefully will lead to longer walks. Start with a 10 minute walk on a regular basis and increase to 30 minutes as tolerated.
There are many simple changes you can make to your habits to get more exercise. Instead of looking for the closest parking spot, park farther away and walk a little. Rather than always taking the elevator, use the stairs if you're able. Little by little you will be able to do more and feel better.
For people who are more active there are numerous forms of exercise. Swimming, jogging, cycling, skiing, tennis, aerobic dancing, walking, yoga or any one of many other activities can help your heart. If possible choose an activity that warms your body, causing you to perspire. Your goal is to breath heavily, but not be out of breath. You should have enough breath to be able to talk while exercising.
It doesn't matter whether you participate in a structured regular exercise program or modify your day to add more activity, adding exercise adds up to a healthier heart.
Tips for exercise success:
- If you're overweight or have been mostly sedentary, are at high risk for coronary disease or have some chronic health problem, be sure to consult with your physician before you begin any exercise program.
- Choose varied activities that you enjoy and avoid exhaustion. If you participate in fun and enjoyable activities, you won't become bored and will want to continue the activity on a regular basis.
Wear comfortable clothes; you don't need special outfits to exercise. However, shoes can be very important to ensure that you don't cause damage to joints. Investing in good, proper, well-fitting footwear suitable for your exercise is an investment in your heart health.
- Make it convenient. Any time of day or any place is suitable if it works in your schedule. Gym memberships may be the best way for some people to exercise, but your own home, neighborhood or workplace are all equally good.
- Find a partner. The best motivation is having a friend to exercise with. You'll commit to a time, a place and also to your exercise partner. Choose someone who is motivated and energetic and she will enhance your own incentive and commitment. You'll create a symbiotic relationship that helps both of you achieve your health goals more easily.
